Bulgarian egg producers are struggling due to a surge in imports of cheaper Ukrainian eggs, leading the Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture and Food, Giorgi Takhov, to seek a ban on these imports from the European Commission. In the first half of 2024, Bulgaria imported 2,618 tons of Ukrainian eggs, five times more than the previous year, which has significantly pressured the domestic market and caused bankruptcies among local poultry farms. Takhov contends that current EU protective measures are inadequate, despite Bulgaria not being a top importer of Ukrainian eggs.
