The town of Porto Marinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is pursuing a Geographical Indication (GI) registration for its unique dwarf rice variety, which has been cultivated for decades without the use of harmful chemicals and has a distinct flavor and consistency. The project, which aims to add value to the product and stimulate economic and social development, involves partnerships from various local and state institutions. The initiative also includes efforts to expand the rice's market reach, develop its branding and packaging, and enhance local cooks' skills through training. Research on potential functional uses and innovative recipes, as well as the creation of tourism itineraries featuring the town's gastronomy, history, rural areas, and ecology, are also part of the project, set to conclude in 2023.
