The European Union (EU-27) has seen a significant increase in sunflower seed imports for the 2022-23 marketing year, reaching volumes not seen since 2003-04. This surge is primarily due to increased crush activity within the EU, driven by high domestic vegetable oil prices, and partially due to a poor harvest. The majority of the imports have been from Ukraine, making up 87.1% of total imports. The US Department of Agriculture predicts that the EU's total sunflower seed imports for the year will reach 2.35 million tons, an all-time high.
