The first quarter of 2021 saw a decrease in exports from Chile's extractive fishing and aquaculture sector, with a 4.1% reduction in sales abroad and a 7.3% decrease in production, totaling 184,619 tons. This decline is attributed to the ongoing pandemic's impact, consumer demand shifts, and logistical issues. Specifically, there was a 19% drop in fish meal sales and a 25% decrease in canned seafood sales. However, frozen horse mackerel sales saw a 41% increase, and concentrated omega 3 oils for the nutraceutical industry experienced a 65% sales increase, driven by markets in the US, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, and the UK.
