Ethiopian coffee exporters have failed to fulfill 394 export contracts due to a decrease in international coffee prices, which have fallen below the local price in Ethiopia. This has led to a profit margin decrease, and as a result, exporters are withholding 28,000 tons of coffee worth US$133 million. The domestic market price of coffee has increased dramatically over the past year, making it more expensive for exporters to obtain coffee domestically and forcing them to export at a loss. The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority is considering negotiating new prices with customers abroad. The target of raising US$2 billion from coffee exports in the current Ethiopian fiscal year is facing challenges due to these price fluctuations.
