A cooperative investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and state and local health departments has been initiated to address a norovirus outbreak linked to the consumption of raw oysters. The outbreak, affecting multiple states, prompted a trace forward investigation to identify the source of the contaminated oysters and ensure their removal from the food supply. The investigation has led to the identification of specific harvest locations in Baynes Sound, BC, and a warning for retailers and consumers against serving or consuming raw oysters harvested from these areas. Norovirus infections can be particularly dangerous for individuals with weakened immune systems, but it's important to note that even healthy people can fall ill from eating contaminated oysters, as the symptoms can remain undetected due to the food looking, smelling, and tasting normal.
