France's sugar beet and sugar cane harvest for the just concluded campaign saw a slight increase from the previous year, with sugar beets harvested reaching 31.5 million tonnes and sugar cane nearly 2 million tonnes. Despite a nearly 6% decrease in surface area, the sector managed to adapt to climatic and agronomic challenges, according to Cultures Sucre. However, the sector faces concerns over a virus called yellows transmitted by a green aphid. The ban on neonicotinoid insecticides, intended to protect pollinators, has caused apprehension among planters about potential crop losses. The government has temporarily allowed more use of Movento insecticide while maintaining the ban on some neonicotinoids. High sugar prices on the world market have supported beet cultivation, which is crucial for France's food sovereignty, energy, health, and is self-sufficient in sugar, exporting half of its production.
