The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Technology Institute (Director Kim Dong-hoon) Potato Research Institute recently revealed that due to rising temperatures caused by climate change, the overwintering period of virus-carrying insects is shortening, increasing the risk of seed potato virus disease. To minimize damage to farming households, they have presented preventive management tips. Currently, the viruses primarily affecting seed potatoes are PVY (Potato Virus Y) and PLRV (Potato Leaf Roll Virus), both of which are transmitted by peach-potato aphids. PVY causes mosaic or yellowing symptoms on leaves, splits on the tuber surface resembling a turtle shell, and in severe cases, results in ginger-shaped deformed potatoes.
