Europe is experiencing a decline in its pig herd and record high pig prices, with around 6% to 7% fewer pigs in 2022 compared to the average from 2017 to 2020. This decrease is attributed to increased production costs, legislation for environmental and animal welfare, environmental impact of pork production, and disease. Despite pork consumption in Europe expected to decrease by 7.2% by 2031, demand for pork remains high as long as it tastes good. The Genesus Jersey Red Duroc breed is leading in the production of high marbled, tender pork, which drives demand and higher prices in the market.
