Georgia has increased its dependence on Russian wheat

Russia increased its wheat exports to Georgia by a third last year – to three-year highs. Thus, at the end of 2024, Georgia imported 325 thousand tons of wheat from Russia for 75.7 million dollars. Imports in monetary terms increased by 35% compared to 2023 and became the maximum since 2021. Then the purchases reached 87.4 million dollars. In December, Tbilisi imported 25 thousand tons of Russian wheat for 6.1 million dollars – in monetary terms 9.4% less than in November and 8.6% more than a year ago. Last year, Russia took first place in Georgian wheat imports by a wide margin. In addition to Russia, Georgians bought this grain in Kazakhstan (367 thousand dollars), as well as in Belarus, France, Greece and Romania (12-37 thousand dollars). In addition to wheat, last year Georgia bought corn from Russia – 56 thousand tons for 11.8 million dollars (4% more than a year ago).
