Germany's pig production industry is facing a crisis with a significant decline in the number of pig herds over the past decade. According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, around 2,000 breeders have left the industry between January and October of the previous year, leaving about 16,900 herds remaining. The total pig population in Germany has also seen a decrease, with a 10% increase compared to the previous year, but a significant 12% reduction in the sow population. This decline is attributed to economic challenges such as increasing feed, energy, and fertilizer costs, and a lack of future prospects. This trend is similar to that in Poland, where the pig population has also reached a level not seen since the end of World War II.
