A trial to cultivate ginger in commercial quantities is successful in the Northern Territory of Australia, leveraging the region's high humidity and rainfall. The trial, backed by the Territory government, aims to establish a disease-free ginger industry, focusing on two varieties: Queensland Gold and Canton. With potential prices of up to $25 a kilogram, it could revolutionize the Australian ginger industry, which has an annual farm-gate value of approximately $32 million. Preliminary results suggest that a hectare of greenhouse space could generate around $175,000. Grower Michael Jakobi is optimistic about producing ginger in commercial quantities but emphasizes the importance of demonstrating a reputation for clean, green, and disease-free ginger.
