Italy: Gluten-free products, market worth over 400 million and sales up 6%

There are "only" 233,147 celiacs diagnosed in Italy. But in 2022 over 10 thousand tons of pasta and almost 15 thousand tons of "gluten free" bread substitutes were purchased in large-scale distribution, increasing the volumes purchased (+4.2% and +3.6% respectively on 2021) and the amount spent (+6%), showing willingness to pay more for gluten-free products. Also thanks to the contribution of the National Health Service, which in 2020 (latest data available) spent over 209 million euros to support the purchase of gluten-free products, spending around one thousand euros per capita per year on average. Also for this reason, today celiacs represent a highly coveted target for food companies, which are investing more and more in the gluten-free world, the creator of constant growth in large-scale distribution for some years.
