In 2020, the Tanzanian government has made significant investments in the agricultural sector, with a focus on strategic crops such as chikichi, sisal, sunflower, cotton, and cashew nuts, particularly to reduce imports of cooking oil. The government is encouraging the production of quality seeds for oil-producing crops and increasing the cultivation of sunflower, which is currently responsible for 70% of the country's cooking oil production. Other investments include building the capacity of farmers to increase cotton productivity and identifying the best cotton seed varieties for distribution. Tanzania also aims to increase its cashew production from 300,000 tonnes to one million tonnes by 2024, making it the first African country to surpass Ivory Coast's production.
