REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced that the government targets Papua to achieve food self-sufficiency within the next three years. This will be done through the expansion of new rice fields and the optimization of local food products such as sago. Amran conveyed this during a press conference at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday (16/12/2025). He explained that Papua's rice needs currently reach 660,000 tons per year, while production is only around 120,000 tons. To cover the 500,000-ton deficit, the expansion of rice fields covering 100,000 hectares is needed. “We will achieve Papua’s food self-sufficiency in at least 3 years. If possible, it can be completed in 2 years,” said Amran. The government plans to divide the rice field expansion in the regions of South Papua, Papua, and West Papua, including six other provinces that also request rice field expansion.
