The Indian government has increased the minimum support price (MSP) for copra, a dried coconut meat, by Rs 422 to Rs 12,100 per quintal for the 2025 season. This decision was made by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a budget allocation of Rs 855 crore. The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) recommended the new MSP, which is 50% higher than the cost of production. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation (NCCF) will oversee the procurement of copra and de-husked coconut under the price support scheme. The states contributing the most to copra production include Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. This move is anticipated to provide better returns to coconut growers and encourage more farmers to expand copra production to meet the growing demand for coconut products.
