Grapefruit, including the closely related pomolo, is a somewhat unremarkable product. And in the sense that there is apparently not much movement in it and therefore little attention is paid to it. Worldwide production is growing strongly, but cross-border trade has been fairly stable for years. Underneath, something has changed. Exports from the United States have fallen sharply, but this is offset by strong growth in exports from China. The strong production growth is therefore mainly attributable to growth in China. According to the FAO, the production of mainly Chinese pomelos has grown from less than 0.2 million tons at the turn of the century to almost 5 million tons. In the same period, production in the United States fell from 2.5 to 0.5 million tons. After China, Vietnam is now the second grapefruit (pomelo) producer with 0.8 million tons.
