The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, together with major flounder exporters, has initiated a campaign to expand halibut exports, particularly focusing on Jeju Island. Halibut, which accounts for 65% of Korea's seafood and farmed fish consumption, is primarily used for sashimi and about 11% is exported mainly to the US, Japan, and China. Despite facing challenges in the export industry, the corporation is seeking support and discussing the diversification of new markets, including Vietnam, and safety management measures to enhance export competitiveness. Halibut exports have seen a significant increase in demand, surpassing $45 million by the end of October, up 6.5% from the previous year.
