In 2020, pangasius exports to the UK experienced a significant surge, with the market value reaching 60.15 million USD in November, a 48% increase from the previous year. This growth made the UK the only major market to show positive growth for nine consecutive months, surpassing the Netherlands as the largest importer of Vietnamese pangasius. Despite the UK importing from various countries, the majority of imports were directly from Vietnam, indicating a shift in trading practices due to Covid-19 and the advantages in price and processing offered by Vietnamese companies. The UK and Vietnam also benefited from the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), effective from December 31, 2020, which not only provides tariff preferences but also demands a commitment to quality transparency, potentially facilitating smoother trade relations and offering more opportunities for pangasius exports in the year ahead.
