The Holland Onion Association has reported a decrease in onion exports this season, following a record year in 2021. The decline is attributed to two factors: a reduction in onion cultivation and lower yields per hectare. Arable farmers have shifted to less risky crops like grain and potatoes due to disappointing yields in recent years and the allure of high grain prices. The total onion planting area has shrunk by 9%, and the yield per hectare has dropped from 57 tonnes to 44 tonnes due to a dry spring and summer.
