A meeting organized by USAID's Potato Program in Georgia and the International Potato Center to gauge local interest and demand for sweet potato production was held in Tbilisi. Currently, sweet potatoes are rarely grown in Georgia and are primarily imported from the Netherlands. However, panelists, including representatives from the hospitality industry and retail trade, anticipate rising demand due to healthier eating habits and vegetarian trends. The USAID program intends to import sweet potato cuttings in spring 2022 and establish a nursery in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region to produce planting material. Once established, the program aims to make sweet potato production profitable for local farmers by offering lower costs and higher prices compared to regular potatoes.
