Indonesia is planning to import 502,000 head of cattle and 85,500 tonnes of beef to address a protein supply gap in the domestic market. The country also intends to issue import licenses for 100,000 tons of Brazilian beef and Indian water buffalo. The Ministry of Agriculture estimated that Indonesia's beef and buffalo consumption in 2021 would reach nearly 696,956 tonnes, marking a 64% increase from the previous year. Meat vendors in Jakarta recently went on strike due to the high cost of meat. The government is diversifying its cattle sources, moving away from Australia, and expects shipments from Mexico to boost national stocks.
