Italy has had a successful 2021 tomato processing campaign, producing over 6 million tons of processed tomatoes, a 17% increase from the previous year, making it the world's second-largest producer after the United States and ahead of China. This increase is due to an expansion in cultivation areas and improved agricultural yield. The quality of the processed tomatoes has been notable, despite the challenges of rising industrial costs. The Ministry of Health (Mipaaf) is forming a work table to protect and enhance the industrial tomato supply chain, with a focus on traceability and origin labeling, reflecting the sector's commitment to transparency and consumer protection.
