From the beginning of the season to now, the export volume of pistachios in shell has reached 192,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 54%, marking an exceptionally bright season for Iran's pistachio industry. The price competitiveness of Iranian pistachios, limited supply from other regions, and the rapid increase in global food industry consumption of Iranian pistachio kernels are the main reasons for this achievement. As of August 22, only 10,000 tons (in shell weight) remain in stock, and with only one month left in the season, the Iran Pistachio Association will inevitably need to adjust its initial estimates for the 2024/25 season before the end of the year.
In the 11 months since the start of the 2024/25 season, Iran's pistachio exports to China totaled 27,822 tons, a 55% increase from the 17,959 tons in the same period of the previous season.
The pistachio shell market continues to stagnate as it awaits the new season, and the volatility of the US dollar against the Iranian rial has increased uncertainty in the local market. Meanwhile, strong demand for various types of nuts is driving the main market for Iranian pistachios.
2025/26 Season Outlook
The official preliminary yield forecast from the association indicates that the production of dried pistachios in shell for the 2025/26 season in Iran is expected to be 240,000 tons. The composition of the new season's harvest is expected to be: long-kernel varieties 55% (Ahmad Aqhayi accounts for 30%, Akbari accounts for 15%, and other long-kernel varieties account for 10%), round-kernel varieties 45% (ordinary round kernels account for 30%, extra-large kernels account for 15%). Most production areas seem to be experiencing an exceptionally high yield for extra-large varieties, while the Akbari variety is expected to have a relatively lower yield due to high temperatures during the flowering period in April 2025.
The harvest of immature pistachios (Kaal) began in August and is nearing completion. In terms of quantity, the harvest of immature pistachios this year seems to be lower, and the price is significantly higher than that of the 2024/25 season. This situation will have a significant impact on the supply and demand trends in the market for peeled green pistachio kernels in the coming weeks. The definition of "Kaal" has been expanded: originally referring mainly to early-harvested peeled green kernels for the European Union, it now extends to a range of early-harvested high-quality dark green kernels to mid-season varieties with higher yields but lighter color, driven by demand from the Middle East and India.
