In the fiscal year 2020-21, Iran exported 2.28 tons of caviar, generating revenue of $1.09 million, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran's Customs Administration. The main destinations for these exports included the UAE, Germany, Japan, Belgium, and Spain. The country also exported 1,000 tons of sturgeon meat, valued at $10 million. However, the sturgeon population in the Caspian Sea, a crucial habitat for the species, is declining due to pollution and overfishing, leading to concerns about extinction and a decrease in caviar exports. To combat this, Iran has imposed strict anti-poaching laws and is extending the ban on commercial sturgeon fishing until the end of 2021.
