A survey by Reuters showed that dry weather caused by El Nino has led to reduced sugar output in India, particularly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh. This has prompted many farmers to consider growing other crops that require less water. Traders predict that India's sugar consumption will reach a record 29.2 million tons this year and increase to about 30 million tons in 2024, leading to growing pressure for India to become a net sugar importer by the first half of 2025.
