In spring 2021, Japan increased beef imports from Canada due to retail demand and anticipated reduced US beef imports. Despite a slight decrease in total beef imports in March, there was a 59% increase in imports from Canada. Meat and poultry sales in April saw a decrease from the previous year but an increase compared to 2019. Restaurant sales in the same month surged from the previous year but declined compared to 2019. Imported beef stocks at the end of March decreased by 9.6% from the previous year, leading to a doubling of beef wholesale prices due to increased demand in other Asian markets.
