Japan plans to release an additional 300,000 metric tons of rice from its emergency stockpile to address a shortage and high prices, marking the second such release this year. In response to retail prices for rice doubling in a year due to extreme heat and tourism demand, the government will also modify its purchasing policy to extend the timeframe for buying the same amount released from five years to one year. It will also streamline the process to bypass wholesalers and reach consumers faster. The release of the stockpiled rice, which needs milling and packaging before use, will be spread out over May through July, with bids for 100,000 tons of stockpiled rice each month. This situation has led to an increase in the use of foreign rice brands due to their lower prices.
