The central government has culled 310 pigs in Thrissur district, Kerala, following an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Madakkatharan Panchayath. The Animal Husbandry Department deployed Rapid Response Teams on July 5 to cull and safely dispose of pigs within a 1-kilometer radius of the affected area. ASF, a highly contagious and deadly viral disease, has spread to about 24 states and union territories in India since May 2020. Authorities have suspended the distribution of pork, operation of related shops, and transportation of pigs, pork, and fodder in and out of the infected area until further notice.
