Larger rapeseed production reduces import demand in the European Union

According to research by Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (mbH), this increase is due to larger rapeseed harvests in Germany, Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. This more than compensated for decreases in production in other Member States. Nevertheless, this result is again below average. Consumption in the EU-27 is estimated at 21.2 million t in 2020/21, a decrease of 4% compared to the previous year. Due to the slightly higher harvest volume and lower demand, the gap between production and consumption should shrink somewhat in 2020/21. In the previous year, 70% of EU consumption was covered by European production. In 2020/21 this share is expected to be 76%. The EU Commission is therefore assuming that less rape will have to be purchased from third countries in the current marketing year than in the previous year.
