The Dominican Republic has initiated the certification of biosecure farms as part of its National Swine Biosecurity Plan, a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Agriculture, FAO, and APHIS/USDA, supported by other Central American and Caribbean countries. This initiative aims to modernize swine farms and reduce disease risks, setting over 75 criteria in areas like infrastructure, food and water management, pest control, and cleaning protocols. The Dominican President underslined the sector's significance, contributing over 50,000 jobs and 2.1% to the country's agricultural production. The FAO representative noted that the implementation of biosecurity standards not only enhances animal health but also boosts regional food security.
