The Department of Intellectual Property in Thailand has registered two new Geographical Indication (GI) products, Phichit white rice and Cherry Higashine from Japan. This brings the total number of registered Thai GI products to 139. Phichit white rice is known for its slender grains and is suitable for making thick and viscous noodles. Cherry Higashine, originating from Japan, is famous for its large, red, and tangy fruits. The registration of these products is part of Thailand's effort to protect and promote GI products, and to build trust among foreign entrepreneurs by protecting product names from violation. Other widely accepted Thai GI products include Thung Kula Loong jasmine rice, Doi Chaang and Doi Tung coffee, and Northeastern local Thai silk.
