At least four companies that supply and service BC's aquaculture industry are suing the Federal Government for losses worth tens of millions of dollars due to decisions to shut down salmon farms in the Discovery Islands. The companies allege that current and former Fisheries Ministers, Joyce Murray and Bernadette Jordan, made unlawful decisions that were aware to harm the companies. The decision has also been challenged by salmon farmers and Indigenous communities, and has resulted in the loss of over 24% of BC’s farmed salmon production and threatened the livelihoods of 1,500 people.
