The European production of beef and veal is expected to be impacted by the consequences of COVID-19 throughout 2021 and into 2022, according to German company AMI. This is due to a decline in beef production, with a 1.2% decrease in cattle in EU member states at the end of 2020 and a 2% decrease in slaughter compared to 2019. The decrease in cattle slaughter is attributed to falling settlement prices and capacity challenges at slaughterhouses. Settlement prices for young animals and cows decreased by 1.5% and 4.3% respectively in 2020. However, beef production is expected to stabilize in 2022 with only Italy and Ireland expected to increase production.
