Malaysia is considering halting palm oil exports to the European Union in response to a new law that prohibits the sale of commodities linked to deforestation, including palm oil. The country will discuss the law with Indonesia and may focus exports on countries that do not have such restrictions. The EU ambassador refuted claims that the law obstructs Malaysian exports and stressed that it is designed to prevent further deforestation. The decline in EU demand for palm oil is expected to continue due to an EU directive to phase out palm-based transport fuels by 2030. Indonesia and Malaysia have launched World Trade Organization cases against the directive, claiming it is discriminatory.
