Durians from Balik Pulau in Penang, Malaysia, are gearing up for a new export season, with a focus on the Musang King variety, which is highly sought after in mainland China and Hong Kong. Despite a delay caused by hot weather, the season is expected to last from May to August. Notably, Musang King durians fetch a much higher price in Hong Kong compared to Malaysia. Since 2019, Malaysia has been exporting shelled frozen durians to China, and in 2023, it produced 455,458 tons of durians, with 10% destined for China, Hong Kong, and Singapore. This year is particularly significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, and for the first time, fresh Malaysian durians are anticipated to be exported directly to the Chinese market.
