The Department of Consumer Affairs in India has noted a significant decrease in the prices of tur and urad pulses in major mandis by approximately 10% over the past three months, due to increased availability and higher sown area of kharif pulses. However, retail prices of chana have seen an increase. The diverging trends between wholesale mandi prices and retail prices indicate that retailers are charging unwarranted margins. To monitor this situation, a meeting was held by the Secretary with the Retailers Association of India and major organized retail chains. The government is also taking steps to increase the domestic production of pulses, as India continues to rely heavily on imports to meet its demand for protein-rich diets.
