Fusarium Race 4 is adding significant costs for banana farms in Ecuador, with expenses ranging from USD 0.08 to 0.13 per box exported, equating to up to 20% of the support price for 2023. This fungus, currently affecting plantations in Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela, threatens Ecuadorian banana production despite current freedom from the pest. In response, the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE) is actively engaging in research to find resistant breeds and importing disease-resistant varieties, such as the Formosana and Gal varieties. These efforts aim to mitigate the impact of Fusarium Race 4 and ensure the sustainability of the banana sector in Ecuador.
