In 2022, Peru reclaimed the title as the world's leading supplier of fresh asparagus, surpassing Mexico, which had held the position since the previous year. Mexico's focus has been to increase its market share in the UK, where it successfully exported more asparagus than Peru from May to June 2024, due to increased demand and challenges in Peruvian asparagus production. Despite these challenges, Peru continued to export a significant amount of asparagus to the UK, with the US, Spain, and the UK being its primary markets. Exports to the US saw a decrease, while those to Spain increased, and the value of exports to the UK rose due to higher average prices, despite a decrease in volume.
