The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) in Brazil has started operations to control fusariosis of the tropical breed 4 banana (Foc R4T) in São Paulo state, despite the disease not yet being present in the country. The disease, identified in neighboring countries like Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela, is spread through infected soil, seedlings, and agricultural equipment. There is no effective chemical control or resistant variety for the disease, which can remain in the soil for over 40 years. Since 2018, Brazil has been monitoring the situation, visiting 143 properties in 2021, all of which tested negative. The control efforts are done in collaboration with the Agricultural Defense Coordination (CDA) of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply (SAA) of the State of São Paulo. An e-book with detailed information about the disease was published by Mapa in 2021.
