Can corn be grown without precipitation and irrigation? The answer cannot be unequivocally negative, as shown by a peculiar case. In Hungary, the size of irrigated areas barely exceeds 100 thousand hectares. This poses a particular problem for crop growers in dry, drought-prone years like the current one, which is why, for example, in Békés, the average yield of corn in 2025 was only 1.8 t/ha. Can this crop be grown without water and irrigation? The answer depends on what we want to use the plant for. Grain corn is not suitable for such harsh conditions, but a recent experiment by a Portuguese farmer produced very unusual results.
