A new feed formulation for tilapia, developed by a scientist at the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD), has shown to perform better and cheaper than commercially available feeds. The feed contains byproducts of ethanol production, rendered animal protein, and processed copra meal, and cost about P28 per kilogram to produce, while commercial feeds cost around P34 to 36 per kilogram. The trials, conducted at SEAFDEC/AQD’s Dumangas Brackishwater Station in Iloilo, showed that the new formulation was more efficient and had a lower feed conversion ratio compared to commercial diets. The goal is to reduce dependence on fishmeal, an expensive and unsustainable ingredient, in feeds.
