The National Pig Association calls for action from Defra on pork supply chain review in the UK

The NPA has called on Defra to ‘push forward without delay’ with its review of the pork supply chain in order to help deliver lasting reform and a fairer trading environment for struggling pig producers. The association has stressed that, after two years of multiple crises that has seen the sector rack up cumulative losses in excess of £750 million while other parts of the chain have posted handsome profits, things cannot continue as they are. More than 350 responses were submitted to Defra’s consultation on contractual practice in the pig supply chain last autumn, most of which were from producers. “This not only gave Defra a very robust mandate, but also a comprehensive body of evidence to be able to make real progress on the outcomes we so desperately need,” said NPA chief executive Lizzie Wilson.
