In 2023, Poland reported PLN 4.2 million in compensation for damages caused by bison, with over 2,800 bison residing in the country, mostly in the wild. The State Treasury covers damages from certain wildlife, including bison, but the Ministry of Climate and Environment does not track costs related to bison reintroduction or care. Despite the damages, there are no plans to reduce protection for bison, wolves, and bears, as these species are endangered or near endangered. European bison are under strict protection and are listed as near extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
