The article reports on the significant growth in hard yellow corn plantings in Peru, with a 4.5% increase compared to the average of the previous five campaigns, covering 132,324 hectares. This surge is attributed to favorable market conditions, including high international prices, ample labor supply, and favorable hydroclimatic conditions. The departments of San Martín, Piura, Ucayali, and Amazonas have seen the most substantial increases in planted areas. Despite high input and fertilizer costs, the higher prices received by producers have been a major factor in this trend. However, the rise in fertilizer and transportation costs challenges this growth. In 2022, the total value of corn imports rose by 16.3% despite a decrease in volume, reflecting the high global demand and prices for corn.
