In 2020, Russian agricultural enterprises accounted for 88.4% of the country's pork production, marking an increase of 11% from the previous year. However, the expected production growth of 5% for 2021 has not materialized due to African swine fever and other epizootic issues, particularly in the Central Federal District. These problems are expected to result in a loss of around 200 thousand tons of pork, or 4% of the production. Additionally, an unusual heatwave in the Central District during the summer led to a decrease in pork production. Despite these challenges, demand for pork among Russians has continued to grow, reaching a peak consumption of 27.9 kg per person per year in 2020.
