Record growth in potato production in Turkey is on the horizon

In 2023, a sharp increase in potato production is expected in Turkey, which is among the 15 largest exporters of the vegetable, according to estimates by analysts of the electronic publication EastFruit. The basis for such estimates is given by the statistics on the import of seed potatoes into Turkey, with 28,500 tons entering the country in the first 4 months of the year - an absolute record for this indicator and 91% more compared to the same period in 2022. The main quantities are delivered from the Netherlands – 78% of all. A further 7% were imported from Great Britain, 6% from France, 4% from Germany and 2% from Belgium. The looming surge in potato production in Turkey appears to be driven by high prices both regionally and domestically. With the rapid increase in the price of potatoes in the country, the government of Turkey banned their export in 2023 along with onions.
