Brazilian research indicates peach palms to the table fruit market

Among hundreds of peach palm trees (Bactris gasipaes Khunt.) preserved in the Germplasm Bank of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) in Pará, some plants are capable of generating quality and tasty table fruits, as evidenced by the results of a recent sensory evaluation -published by the institution. The work is available in the research bulletin Sensory Evaluation in Fruits of Pupunheira Hits of the Active Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Eastern Amazon (access here). The work contains subsidies for the definition of parameters related to the domestication of the species, more specifically to the development of future Embrapa cultivars indicated for insertion in the table fruit market. The consumption of cooked peach palm for breakfast or snack is very common in the northern region of Brazil, but producers interested in peach palm cultivation face a lack of seeds with predictable and desirable characteristics of the fruit.
