Until 2020, walnuts remained the largest export commodity of the fruit and vegetable group, consistently bringing Ukraine the largest export earnings. However, according to EastFruit experts, in 2020 the situation began to change dramatically. At the end of the 2020/21 walnut season (from October to September), Ukraine's export revenue from the sale of walnuts, both kernels and nuts in shells, decreased by 20% compared to the previous season and amounted to $ 98.6 million.

90% of this amount is brought to the country by the export of walnut kernels. Losses in export volume amounted to 28.3% in the export of kernels - from 36 thousand tons to 25.9 thousand tons and 57.7% in the export of unshelled nuts - from 20.8 thousand tons to 8.8 thousand tons. Of the top 10 countries where Ukraine exports walnuts, sales to Turkey decreased the most - by 77% in terms of kernel volume and 69% in terms of unshelled walnuts. This is due to the tariff on imports of walnuts (both in shell and without), which Turkey has increased since December 31, 2020, to 15% for all countries of origin, with the exception of countries where a free trade agreement with Turkey is in force.
