The article highlights the significant threat to sturgeon survival in the Lower Danube basin due to poaching and the illegal trade of caviar and wild sturgeon meat, despite existing prohibitions in Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, and Ukraine. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has conducted a survey confirming widespread illegal activities. In response, WWF-Central and Eastern Europe (WWF-CEE) is implementing projects like MEASURES and SWIPE to combat poaching, create ecological corridors, protect sturgeon habitats, and enhance law enforcement and prosecution of wildlife crimes. These initiatives aim to ensure the survival of sturgeon species by advocating for an integrated, fair approach that includes community involvement, conservation efforts, and stricter enforcement of fishing regulations.
